Despite being able to relate well with Hermione Granger, I’ve realized that it’s okay not to be a know-it-all in every field. In fact, sometimes it’s better just to know someone who knows it all. (that and be superb at Google-Fu). That being said, I’ve learned an awful lot about the right (and the wrong) ways to grow your Facebook page organically (that’s right – no ads!).
How did I learn all this? From Facebook guru Meredith Ethington, of course. She’s a behind-the-scenes kind of force…. She’s helped blogs go from several thousand followers to more than half a million active followers. Her page jumped from a couple of thousand to more than 35 thousand. And that’s just in the last six months or so.
So, when I tell you that this gal knows what she’s doing, I mean it. She knows what she’s doing! I’m going to go over just some of what I’ve learned from her book and working with her.
Grow your Facebook Page – by knowing what people want
What is it that people want? Well, let’s take a step back. I remember looking at those blog hops and sharing swaps… and I hated them. Why? Everyone was there to drop a link and then they were off like a parent dropping a kid off at a birthday party. You’re lucky to get in two words, right?
Your Facebook page shouldn’t become one of those link parties. It was a real face-slap for me to realize that I was doing what I hated to my followers. I realized how lucky I am to have some true friends that stick around. Even after all I did was share, share, and reshare blog posts I’d written.
I mean, sure, I’m a pretty good writer (my mom says I’m hilarious), but nobody wants to see just those links day in and day out. It was time to evolve into a community – it was time to incorporate memes, vemes (video memes), quotes, anecdotes from my day, tribe questions, scavenger hunts, and anything else to drive engagement. And you know what? It’s a lot more fun this way.

My Facebook page is still growing (dude, I did a huge happy dance when I broke 150 after a rebrand), but my engagement and reach is several times larger than my audience. So when I share a picture with my followers, it’s being seen by closer to 1000 people. That’s HUGE! And it’s a trend that continues for everyone who uses the methods Meredith outlines in detail.
Grow Your Facebook Page Using Insights Page
Another thing I learned was how to use the Insights page. Knowing how to use that has been a huge time-saver and life-saver for me. I used to hate using social media so much that I had a virtual assistant doing it for me… and then the bank broke so that I couldn’t do that anymore. But now I can use the Insights tab to see what’s trending in like markets, schedule a day’s worth of posts in about 20 minutes, and invite more people to like my page directly.
It’s simple, now that I know how to do it. The trick is finding and following other pages and blogs that your community will find interesting. Then, you share the best-performing posts, and it boosts your reach like crazy.
And, as long as you follow sharing etiquette (which I had to learn in the eBook… oops!), you’ll soon find that the other blogs and pages are sharing your content. Seeing a meme I created get shared like crazy by some larger blogs and pages has made me do several happy dances… sure, it didn’t achieve ‘viral’ status, but having something that I made seen by 4,000+ people is pretty big for a mommy blogger with only 350 followers.
And more…
Now, if you want the whole scoop, I highly recommend you invest in Meredith’s eBook because there’s simply no way for me to cover everything she did unless I copy and paste… and that’s not cool, ya know?

It’s a quick, easy read and it’s one of the best investments I’ve made recently. Oh – and speaking of Insights and growing my Facebook page organically, it’s time for me to go schedule tomorrow’s posts. I’ll see you on Facebook!
