Are you planning a Las Vegas Getaway anytime soon? Vegas is just such a fun place to go to. We just went for our third New Years in a row, and fifth time overall. I know what you are thinking Vegas for New Years has to be expensive. Surprisingly it is not as expensive as you think. When we started pricing the trip for the first time we went I was expecting it to cost a whole lot more. With this being my fifth time to go I have found 5 money saving tips for traveling to Vegas.
Las Vegas Getaway Money Saving Tips
No need for rental car – You really don’t need a rental car if you stay on the strip. Staying on the strip in the right hotel, you should be able to walk pretty much anywhere. Renting a car can actually be more of a pain cause you end up having to walk through the whole hotel anyway. Plus, just checking out all the hotels is the most fun! You also have several monorails that will take you from hotel to hotel, and are free. Then you have the monorail that starts at MGM and pretty much takes you down that entire side of the strip. That monorail costs $5 for a single ride all the way to $56 for an unlimited 7-day pass, which is still cheaper than renting a car.
Extra Tip: While talking about transportation I would not recommend the city bus. We tried that a couple of times, and it did not work out well.
Book Hotel through Rewards programs– Most of the hotels on the strip are part of two of the big rewards programs M Life or Total Rewards. I actually found that most of the time I have been able to get a better rate on a room booking through M Life than any other rate I found online (i.e Expedia, Hotels.com, etc). This also helps you start earning points in the reward program that can help you get discounts on future stays, and other things.
Uber – We have actually found Uber to be cheaper than taxis. This time, instead of booking an airport shuttle or taking a taxi like we have done in the past, we took Uber from the airport to our hotel (New York New York ). The cost was $11 for the 3 1/2 miles, which was cheaper than the taxi or airport shuttle.
Eat Cheap – Vegas has a TON of places to eat and lots are fairly pricey. You can find cheaper places to eat you just have to look.
- One great way to eat cheap for breakfast is to go to La Salsa Cantina. They have a $3 breakfast that is pretty good. My mom found this place years ago, and we have gone pretty much every time we are in Vegas. You can even get a Bloody Mary with the breakfast for an extra $1. They have a couple locations on the strip.
- Know which food courts to go to. The food court by MGM that has Subway, Wendy’s, etc. tends to have higher prices. You can go to the food court at Monte Carlo that has a Subway, and it is cheaper. Not sure why, but it is.
- We tend to eat cheaper at breakfast and lunch, then go out to a couple nice dinners.
Discount Show Tickets – They do have some Half Price Show Tickets booth locations where you can get discount tickets for shows that night. One time we were able to get a deal that by booking our room we got free show tickets to see Cirque Du Soleil show, KA , so that can be an option sometimes. You can also find some dinner and a show deals. The big tip is just to research and discover what is available. Shows are a ‘must’ for your Las Vegas getaway. With so many to choose from you are sure to find one you like. We have seen two Cirque Du Soleil shows KA and Michael Jackson ONE. Both shows were simply amazing.
Extra Tip: We have looked and looked for the last few years for discount tickets for Michael Jackson ONE with no luck – we guess because it is newer and really popular. If you do find a discount ticket consider yourself very lucky cause they are hard to come by, and you better jump on it. We broke down and paid full price this time, but it was well worth it because the show was AMAZING!

These tips will save you money on your Las Vegas getaway, and give you more money to gamble with.
Now if you are wanting to go for New Years, and want to go to a New Years Eve Party you better plan ahead. We learned that the hard way this year. I looked ahead of time at maybe going to TAO for New Years to see Snoop Dogg, and as time went on, the price just went up the closer it got to show time. In fact, the price pretty much doubled. Since it doubled we decided not to go. If you wait until New Years Eve and try to get into something, you are probably paying at least $100 per person.
What are some ways you save money when traveling?
