Did you know orangutans share 97% of their DNA with humans?
A couple of years ago, I spent time in the Borneo rainforest amongst orangutans and was fascinated with their behaviors, habits and most of all social skills and learning!
Orangutans are amongst the most intelligent primates.
Did you know primates possess the manual dexterity required for keyboard operation?
In the absence of their mothers, orangutans develop different forms of social contact and communication.
Orangutans, like food bloggers using social media, adapt to their environment, learn new life skills, plan actions, and solve other everyday problems.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery they say!
While I had a vast amount of technical knowledge when it came to creating my blog called What’s On The List on Christmas Day in 2012, I had limited knowledge of social media and how each media would work best for my blog and me!
My dad taught me the best life lessons and shared if one does their homework, one can come to an educated decision what to do; a lesson I would like to share with you!
I made lists and followed some of my favorite food bloggers from around the world and “experienced” how, when and where they posted and more importantly why!
While there are over 200+ social media networks throughout and world, I decided to apply the K.I.S.S (Keep it Simple Stupid) philosophy!
Would social media be kind to my blog and me?
Facebook was my first…one always remembers their first!
Was Facebook my food diary for all the world to see?
First thing I decided throughout all social media was my privacy!
HIGHLIGHTS OF FACEBOOK I HAVE LEARNED
— variety is the spice of life; don’t be scared to try and share new things
— tag, hashtag; it was a fun game when I was little, and in doing do, many surprises it brings
— no use complaining over “spilled Facebook milk” ; just like in “real” life, no use wasting time with negativity and being versatile to change, THAT’S the Facebook “insider’s tip” from me
— Facebook is never going to be all things to all people; just be yourself and share what comes naturally
Recently, everyone seems to be complaining about one aspect or another about Facebook, but while people are complaining, my Facebook wall consistently does 85 – 90 percent better than the rest of what is posted on the page!
Here’s a Facebook thought to ponder!
Once something is posted to Facebook or the world wide web, it doesn’t ever come down as even if you delete a photo, a URL is saved FOREVER!
HIGHLIGHTS OF PINTEREST I HAVE LEARNED
— Pinterest is addicting from the start and you can literally “live” there 24/7; don’t say I did not warn you
— think of Pinterest like virtual Post-It notes; they are posted and pinned everywhere
— take your Pinterest time and get your boards expressing you and your blog’s personality
— “Pin, Share, Care!” … you can quote me
— there is a way of organising your Pinterest Boards in alphabetical order
I have the answer, would you like to know?
HIGHLIGHTS OF TWITTER I HAVE LEARNED
— make sure to do your “Twitter Pitter” homework on hashtags, how many and types of posts you want to express you
— never be forced to do something you don’t want to Twitter do
— keeping up in the “Twitter Pitter” lane may initially be too fast for you
— in time, think of Twitter as your social media friend
— promote, but be polite expressing your personality
Do you know what happens to a Twitter account if you or someone you loved dies?
The answer may be unsettling to some; do you REALLY want to know?
While in the Borneo rainforest, I learned orangutans have a unique way of moving through the trees called brachiating.
Navigating through social media, like swinging from the trees is a “learned” social behavior.
Some master swinging from one branch (or swinging from one social media to another) with ease; some it takes a bit longer to understand just what it takes to do!
Orangutans have unique adaptations to their life amongst the treetops.
My best piece of social media advice?
Use your keyboard wisely using social media as your tool to “obtain, achieve, surpass” your goals set for you blog and you!

About the Author: G’day! By way of introduction, my name is Joanne. I am American born and bred (NY), now an Aussie who calls Australia home since 1997.
As a PASSIONATE Home Cook, I try and “inspire” people one recipe and one event at a time too!
My food blog is called What’s On The List?
I always like to contact people and companies when I have mentioned their site or recipes on my blog.
I know people get ping backs about links, but always think it is more personalized this way.
