If you are struggling to generate the desired results from your SEO campaign, you are not alone. Search engine optimization results are heavily reliant on your selection of SEO keywords for your website; you may think your keywords are stellar choices, but your results may tell a different story. Going back to the drawing board and making better choices for keywords may help you generate the SEO results you truly desire.
How to Choose Effective SEO Keywords for Your Website
Review the Competition for Your Keywords
The first step to take is to review the competition for the keywords you have selected. When you choose words that are more heavily targeted by others, there is less of a chance that your own website will be ranked highly. Instead, you want to choose keywords that are less frequently targeted by others.
These keywords should still be words or phrases that your audience will use to find your products and services. For example, if you are in the web design services business, the word “web design” may be targeted heavily. Specific services, however, may be less frequently targeted. For example, “website” or “website designing” may be better word combinations. You can research the competition for words by using one of the many online tools designed for this task that are available through different providers.

Give Your Keywords a Local SEO Edge
Take it a step further and give your keywords a local edge if you have a local target audience. If you sell WordPress themes to areas across the country, this may not be as helpful to you. However, if you are a web designer, for example, you likely only offer your services in a defined geographic area, such as Washington state. You can focus on the city as well as surrounding suburbs, such as Olympia, when select keywords. You can choose “web designer in Olympia” or “web design service in Olympia” for even more targeted results.
