Aging does not have to be all doom and gloom. See how Positive Aging can change your life for the better!
Why Positive Aging is Positively Wonderful was originally published by Sue Loncaric on Sizzling Towards Sixty.
Midlife is the time to reflect, but also a time to look forward, and plan what you want for the rest of your life. Yes, the downside of midlife for women are the hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, and other symptoms of menopause. BUT these can be controlled, and should not be AN EXCUSE to give up on how you look, how you feel, or even your life.
Positive Aging is a wonderful term.
Who wants to be bitter or twisted as we age? I came across the term ‘Positive Aging’ while reading a magazine, and it made me pause, and think. It appears to be the ‘buzz’ term at the moment, however there is something in ‘Positive Aging’.
The Australian Psychological Society describes Positive Aging as ‘a term used to describe the process of maintaining a positive attitude, feeling good about yourself, keeping fit, and healthy, and engaging fully in life as you age…’
So often, when I speak with older people, many of them appear to be full of the ‘bah humbug’ syndrome. I look at them, and say to my husband “If I sound like that when I get older — shoot me!”
Of course not all older people are negative. We have some wonderful role models and mentors, and I have them in my personal life. It is sad though to see people drifting through the last phase of their life, and not making the most of it. We are living longer, and there is no reason why we can’t live full, and active lives for many years after we retire.
You choose: Positive Aging or Doom and Gloom
I accept that there is a lot of gloom in the world, however we only have one shot at life! So it is up to us how we want to be – Positive or Negative!

Drop the fixation on aging and your age. The old saying “Age is Just a Number” is just that! Stop moaning about greying hair, expanding waistlines, or ever-increasing wrinkles!!! You have the power to change how you feel.
If you don’t like your hair color – dye it!
If you don’t like your expanding waistline – exercise!
If you feel in a rut – do something about it! If you don’t know how read my post “Help! I’m in a Rut and Can’t Get Out”
It is all about doing something for yourself to make you feel happy and love yourself. It is different for everyone, you just need to find what is right for YOU and what makes YOU happy!
When was the last time you had fun or a good belly laugh?
I was sitting with my husband having breakfast in a nearby cafe. There were a table of ladies near us, and they all sounded like a group of hens as they laughed, giggled, and chatted. I thought about it, and decided how lovely it was to hear them laugh, and enjoy each others’ company. We all have our problems in life, but we can still be grateful for what we have, and find our own happiness.
I saw this great post on twitter – “You only live once, we always hear that, but the statement is false. Think about it you live every day. You only die once.”
Last week, I lost a wonderful friend. She was a beautiful soul, kind, loving, and with a wonderful passion for life. She went skydiving with her grandson at 78 years old, was always active, volunteered at the local hospital, enjoyed playing bridge, and loved cooking for people; and when her world fell apart, and she lost her husband 18 years ago, she kept going, and made every day count.
Luciana had a way of making everyone feel special, and always had a beautiful smile for anyone she met. Even when she was diagnosed with cancer, and only given months to live she kept on ‘positive aging’. A remarkable woman, who I will miss terribly.
There is good news, a survey conducted by Active Aging Australia found 80% of 50+ are happy and healthy! Are you one of those 80%? If not? Why not?
