This question has two aspects, the administrative one that can be answered with marketing theory and a social one that depends on your goals and personality.
Blog Branding – The importance of your name online
In short, the answer is “Yes”, you need to be everywhere, owning your name. And by “everywhere” it means the five main social platforms which nowadays are Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and Google which includes G+ and YouTube. There are other ones that you can use but the bulk of your web traffic will come from these.
The point of having accounts on all platforms is to own your brand name, whether you are planning to use those accounts immediately or not. You are booking the space in case another person wants to use the same name later on.

Before you open your first social media account for your brand in any of the five main platforms, open each site in a tab on your computer and check name availability on all of them for brand cohesion. Having a different name for each platform can be confusing for your prospective clients. This is your chance to be the first to have your brand’s name or make slight tweaks to it for a uniform image.
Once you have your accounts, which are a must from the marketing point of view you need to decide how much or how little you are going to use them. The further you want to take your brand, the more you need to be seen on them consistently. And of course, being polite, answering all interactions and engaging with other users will expand your reach.
